Staten Island: Suburbs in the City

Staten Island is an oft-forgotten borough. It was called Richmond until 1975, but when the Verrezano-Narrows bridge -  one of the longest suspension bridges in the world – opened, it became much more easily accessible, and they decided on a new name.

Part of Staten Islands’ bad reputation comes from the Fresh Kills Landfill which for more than 50 years, from 1947 to 2001, was the city’s trash repository. During this past decade, the landfill has been cleaned and plans for a park, larger than Central Park, are in store.
While Staten Island is the only borough not serviced by subway, the railway runs the length of the island and the ferry offers quick service to Manhattan.
There are many renovated homes on the Island, which like Long Island, is a very suburban area. If you want a renovated house and are looking in the New York metropolitan area, homes on Long Island and Staten Island offer the removed feeling that one gets from being in the suburbs, with access to the city just half an hour away. There are so many options when it comes to renovated homes that all you have to do is know what you want, and choose it.
